Harry Kane Wins Ballon d’Or, Ending England’s 25-Year Wait
Bayern Munich plan a tribute to the England captain after his 73-goal season earned him the 2026 Ballon d’Or ahead of Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal.

LONDON — Bayern Munich are preparing to honour Harry Kane in front of their supporters after the England captain won the 2026 men's Ballon d'Or, ending a 25-year wait for an English winner of football's leading individual award.
Kane received the prize at the London Palladium on Monday, 26 October, ahead of Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé and Barcelona's Lamine Yamal. He is the first Englishman to win it since Michael Owen in 2001.
The 33-year-old's case was built on a season of extraordinary scoring. He registered 73 goals in 65 appearances for Bayern and England during the 2025–26 campaign, including 61 in 51 club matches. He also won the men's striker of the year award at the ceremony.
Goals that carried across competitions
Bayern won the Bundesliga and German Cup, while Kane finished as the German league's top scorer for a third successive season. He added 14 goals in the Champions League as the Munich club reached the semi-finals.
For England, he scored 12 times over the same campaign. Six came at the 2026 World Cup, where the national team finished third. Those performances gave voters evidence of his influence well beyond domestic football.
Kane described the past season as the finest of his career and thanked the teammates and coaches who had helped him reach those figures. It was a notable moment for a forward whose path to the top included loan spells before he became Tottenham Hotspur's record goalscorer and later moved to Germany.
His success also carries weight at Bayern. The last player from the club to win the Ballon d'Or was Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981. Across the Bundesliga, no player had claimed the men's award since Borussia Dortmund's Matthias Sammer in 1996.
A homecoming planned in Munich
Bayern said on Tuesday, 27 October, that Kane would receive a special welcome before Wednesday's German Cup fixture against Magdeburg at the Allianz Arena. The club also plans to recognise him when Borussia Dortmund visit for Saturday's Bundesliga meeting.
The announcement gives Bayern a chance to celebrate an individual distinction in the middle of a demanding week of fixtures. Kane's award came after a season in which the club's domestic trophies were matched by his scoring contribution in Europe and for England.
The presentation also had an English setting. The Ballon d'Or ceremony moved to London for its 70th anniversary, marking seven decades since Stanley Matthews became the inaugural winner in 1956. Kane joins Matthews, Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Owen among English recipients of the men's prize.
Spain's Alexia Putellas won the women's Ballon d'Or for the third time, drawing level with Aitana Bonmatí. The pair's awards were presented on the same evening in London.
For Kane, the next public moment will be back at the Allianz Arena, where supporters will be able to acknowledge an honour no Bayern player had received in 45 years.
